Marco Pezzuto

Langhe Nebbiolo "Garbin" 2024

Selected for Atria by Caroline Williams, Curated Cellar

The story

Marco Pezzuto is one of Piedmont's exciting young winemakers. He started working in vineyards as a teenager, planted his own vines in 2018 and released his first wine in 2021. His vineyards are in Vezza d'Alba, in the Roero hills just across the Tanaro River from Barolo and Barbaresco. In his words: "Terroir to me is not only the soil and microclimate, but also the person in the vineyard and winery."

The wine

Garbin is 100% Nebbiolo, the noble grape of Barolo, grown on sand and red clay. Marco handles it gently: delicate extraction, fermentation and aging in large oak vats, and no added sulfur. Only about 5,900 bottles were made.

In the glass

In Marco's words, "a pure expression of Langhe Nebbiolo, that smells like red cherries, spicebush, and alpine herbs." 2024 was a cool, challenging year in Piedmont, and it gave a lighter, more immediate style: fragrant, bright and made to enjoy now.

Enjoying it

Serve slightly cool, around 60–62°F; 15 minutes in the fridge is perfect. A large glass helps the aromas open. Lovely with mushroom risotto, roast chicken, salumi, pasta with ragù or aged cheeses.

A note from Caroline

I love finding wines from people who are just getting started and already doing something beautiful. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do. Cheers!
